We offer a comprehensive evaluation with an emphasis on listening fully to your story about how and when your symptoms developed and what your goals are for therapy. We may assess any of the following as it pertains to your case in order to design an individualized plan of care for you:
joint range of motion and flexibility, strength, soft tissue integrity and tenderness, posture, static and dynamic balance, walking characteristics (gait exam), neurological and oculomotor exam, discussion of current and past physical activity level and emotional stressors, ergonomic set-up of home office, and home safety and use of assistive devices as it pertains to a fall risk
We carefully prescribe exercises and activities that are designed to help improve your strength, range of motion, flexibility and physical conditioning that assist in achieving your goals.
These are specialized hands-on techniques designed to ease muscular tension, improve flexibility, joint mobility and alignment and relax the nervous system. These include soft tissue mobilization, myofascial release techniques, scar tissue mobilization, and muscle energy techniques among others.
We prescribe static and dynamic balance exercises, in addition to strength training, stretching and functional movement exercises, to help improve your balance and decrease your risk of falls. We evaluate your use and need for assistive devices, as applicable. Treatment is carried out in your home, so we also provide a home safety assessment in order to ensure that your home is free of hazards that could increase your risk of falls.
Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy is a specialized area of physical therapy that focuses on treating dizziness, vertigo, balance and visual problems related to dysfunction of the vestibular system or central nervous system.
Dizziness with daily activities is a common complaint among adults and there are many possible causes. We use Vestibular First Insight Infrared Goggles (see photo above) to analyze your eye movements, which are related to brain and inner ear function. This allows for the proper diagnosis and treatment of your condition. Specific exercises are prescribed to retrain your brain, allowing for it to better interpret the input from the inner ear in order to improve your function and resolve your symptoms. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo and can be easily treated through a series of maneuvers guided by your therapist.
We integrate these psychologically-informed methods into your treatment if you are suffering from chronic pain, fatigue or other symptoms. Modern neuroscience reveals that fostering a sense a safety within your mind and body is fundamental for healing to take place. These techniques include exercises that involve mindfulness, somatic tracking, leaning into positive sensations, relaxation, visualization, graded motor imagery (GMI), cognitive-behavioral therapy, and expressive writing among others.
